The Bowie-Dick simulator test is used at the beginning of each day with pre-vacuum steam sterilizers (Scican Bravo, Adec Lisa, Tuttnauer Elara 11, Lexa PLUS) to verify proper air removal from the autoclave chamber. Adequate sterilization can be hindered by air pockets in the chamber, which can act as a barrier and prevent steam from penetrating packaged or wrapped items.
The maxill u-test Bowie Dick Simulation Test (BDS) consists of an outer plastic casing with an internal stainless steel tube that acts as a barrier for air removal and steam penetration. An inner capsule contains a chemical indicator strip that indicates that all air has been removed and replaced by steam.
